KINGSTON — The city is to get $3.2 million from the provincial government as a reward for exceeding its 2023 target for housing starts.

KINGSTON — The city is to receive more than $27 million over three years from the federal government to build new housing.

Article contentKingston and the Islands MP Mark Gerretsen, flanked by five city councillors Thursday morning outside the Kingston Frontenac Housing Corporation townhouses on Curtis Crescent, announced the funding, which is expected to lead to the creation of 890 new housing units.The money is part of the federal government’s five-year, $4-billion housing accelerator fund that aims to support the creation of 100,000 new housing units by 2028.

The More Homes Built Faster Act was passed on Monday, and an information report to be presented to city council next week showed the new rules could greatly reduce the amount of money the city collects to fund critical infrastructure.

Instead, the report stated, the money saved by the reduction of development charges — fees paid by builders for infrastructure related to city services such as water, sewers, roads and electricity for new neighbourhoods — would likely just be pocketed by developers.
